12 Tips for Choosing Eternity Rings

The first question you will face when choosing an eternity ring: open diamond line or closed (full)?
The classic version of the eternity ring involves inlaid stones around the entire perimeter of the ring. However, in jewelry shops you can see a huge number of infinity rings with stones only on the visible part. What to choose?

1. A full circle of diamonds is an undeniable chic. This is a message to myself and the world that I am valuable in myself and want my life to be beautiful even where no one will see it.

2. However, after a certain size of stones, a full eternity can be uncomfortable. Stones and their edges become more tangible, they are also more fixed – as a result, neighboring fingers constantly feel the ribbed surface of the ring. Depending on the degree of individual sensitivity, this can even be unpleasant. I dreamed of a yellow sapphire eternity ring, but now I don’t wear it, because it causes discomfort to the neighboring fingers. It is customary to check the quality of jewelry work in rings of this type as follows: different parts of the ring are carried out at different angles over knitwear or even over synthetic tights. The ring should not catch even the thinnest fiber in any way and slide smoothly over the surface. So my sapphire ring passes this test perfectly, but I still feel uncomfortable wearing it.

3. Stones on the inner side of the palm interact much more with physical objects, and therefore the chance of them falling out and being lost noticeably increases.

4. Only half eternity can be easily resized in a larger or smaller direction.

5. Well, a full eternity, which is logical, is noticeably more expensive. Or, with equal carats, a half will be much more noticeable. In the photo below you can compare the full and half eternity ring with 1 carat diamonds.

And when you have decided on the format of the ring, here are a few more tips that are important to consider when choosing.

1. In many countries (Italy, Spain, Turkey), exactly 5 stones are used for half infinity ring. In Turkey and Italy, it is called the “five-stone ring”. The Italians also call this ring anello veretta – the ring of eternity.

2. It is important that the stones in the ring (and especially in the half-eternity) are of the same color and purity, otherwise the dirtier (if we are talking about purity) or more yellow (if we are talking about color) stones will noticeably stand out from the general row. If you do not make to order, but buy an infinity ring, then carefully check the stones that stand at the edges, it is there that the stones of the worst quality are usually placed.

3. If it is the brilliance and sparkle of diamonds that is more important to you, then you should choose stones with the best clarity (FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2), while sacrificing a little color (to stay on the same budget).

4. Baguette cutting is especially popular now. Infinity rings with it look very elegant and noble.

5. Eternity rings with a combination of different cuts of stones have also become in demand. Looks unique and fresh. You can also alternate diamonds with sapphires (Cartier has such models), especially since sapphires of this size will cost you very little.

6. If you dream of a platinum ring, then its manufacture by a jeweler will cost you 2-2.5 more, despite the fact that the price of platinum as a material is lower than gold, but it is much more difficult to work with. But be prepared for the fact that platinum is a very soft material, so not the most practical for long-term wear.

7. By the way, eternity rings with diamonds were worn with an engagement ring back in the 18th century (when they had already learned how to cut diamonds decently) and then they were called “Keeper ring”, which literally translated as “guardian ring”. It was used to prevent the more valuable engagement ring from falling off the finger (everyone knows that the eternity ring always fits closer to the finger). It was this ring that inspired De Beers when they created their “Eternity” ring.
